Sting nematodes (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) are classified as pests. Here is detailed information about them:
Category: Pest
Description: Sting nematodes (Belonolaimus longicaudatus) are plant-parasitic nematodes that are among the most damaging of all nematode species. They are relatively large for nematodes, typically about 1-2 mm in length. These nematodes inhabit sandy soils and are commonly found in the southeastern United States. They attack a wide range of crops, including turfgrass, vegetables, and various field crops.
Impact: Sting nematodes cause significant damage to plants by feeding on their roots, leading to various adverse effects:
Root Damage: They inject toxins into the roots while feeding, which disrupts root cell function and causes lesions and swelling. This results in a compromised root system that cannot effectively absorb water and nutrients.
Stunted Growth: Plants infested with sting nematodes often exhibit stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and reduced vigor due to impaired nutrient and water uptake.
Wilting and Death: Severe infestations can lead to plant wilting and death, particularly in young seedlings and turfgrass.
